AAA State tournament superlatives

RYZE Hoops Staff

Best Game

Lovett at Greater Atlanta Christian

Lovett plays in one of the toughest 3-A regions, which led to them drawing a 3-seed in the state tournament. That means a trip over to Gwinnett County to face an always tough Greater Atlanta Christian team that comes into the tournament with a 20-8 record.

Best Look Ahead Game

Pace Academy vs Westside Macon

There isn’t a hoops junkie in the state that didn’t circle this matchup as soon as the GHSA State Tournament brackets were released as a matchup they want to see. These are two of the most talented teams in the state with each team having multiple Division 1 prospects on its roster.

Best Potential Player Matchup

Matthew Cleveland vs Kowacie Reeves

Speaking of a potential matchup of Pace Academy and Westside Macon, that brings up a matchup we had the opportunity to see last summer in the LakePoint Tip Off Classic. Matthew Cleveland of Pace Academy and Kowacie Reeves of Westside Macon are both viewed as top 50 prospects nationally in the 2021 class and have scholarship offers from all over the country. Both are about 6-foot-6 and really athletic, but get their work done differently. Cleveland is more of a slasher that is one of the best finishers at the rim you will see, while Reeves is one of the best shooters we have in the Peach State.

Most Intriguing Storyline

Can Sharman White win a 7th state title?

While head coach at Miller Grove, Sharman White won an unprecedented SIX straight state championships (2009-14) before leaving the school for an opportunity to be an assistant coach at Georgia State under Ron Hunter. Now back on the high school sidelines in his second year at Pace Academy, White has a team that just might be good enough to get him his seventh state championship ring, but the Knights have a tough road in front of them.

Most Likely to Make a Name

Shamar Norman and D’Ante Bass

Windsor Forest put up a 23-4 record this year on its way to winning the Region 3 championship. A big reason for their success is the play of junior guard Shamar Norman and sophomore wing D’Ante Bass. For the Knights to make a run to Macon in early March, this duo will need to be at their best all the way through.

Sleeper Team to Make A Run

Hart County

Hart County comes in as a 4-seed in this tournament, but don’t let number under their name on the bracket fool you. This is a team coming off a run to last year’s state championship game looking to finish off what they came so close to last year. Junior guard Shone Webb has had an outstanding year for the Bulldogs and 6-foot-7 freshman forward Tahj Johnson has come on strong in the past couple months.
