A-public/private, AA State Tournament Superlatives

RYZE Hoops Staff

Best Game

Laney vs. Jeff Davis

Laney has had a huge pedigree for winning big games over the past few years out in Augusta while Jeff Davis might have the best player in the tournament in Jaqueze Kirby. Combine those factors and you come out with a game that will likely come down to the wire.

Best Look Ahead

Wilcox County vs. Wilkinson County

Wilcox County’s record remains unblemished on the season at 27-0. They could potentially find themselves matched up with the best program in A-Public over the last decade in Wilkinson County, who finished undefeated in region play. Wilkinson county senior guard Christian Lamar leads the way for the Warriors while Wilcox County is paced by two tough guards and football standouts in Auburn football commit Desmond Tisdol and Univ. of the Cumberlands commit KeyShawn Howard.

Best Potential Player Matchup

Jonathan Taylor, Laney vs. Roman Son, Therrell

Roman Son is one of the winningest floor generals that Georgia has seen over the past few years and one of the toughest competitors that you will find in any classification. He is opposed by another tough-nosed guard in Jonathan Taylor of Laney, who plays with a very similar tenacity. This matchup will not be for the faint of heart, so bring your hard-hat and your lunch pale and expect a tough blue-collar style matchup. I love the parity in this potential second round battle.

Most Intriguing Storyline

Geographical Diversity

I always love the storyline of North vs. South in Georgia, but AA brings it to a whole other level. Sure you have really good programs from south and middle Georgia and the same up in north Georgia, but when you throw in a couple of city schools that have a winning history like Therrell and South Atlanta, it makes for a lot of fun.

Most Likely to Make a Name

A-Private Guards

A-Private has a number of sleeper guards, whose names will likely further emerge in the coming months. North Cobb Christian’s Kami Young, Galloway’s Anthony Arrington, and Providence Christian’s Chance Thacker will all have the chance to leave their mark on their sophomore seasons before heading into the travel year, but they will be names that you hear from in the future.

Sleeper Team to Make A Run

Drew Charter

When you have a guy like JaKobe Strozier (Pictured) in the A-Public classification, anything is possible. The Region 5 Player of the Year has all the tools to take over games and lead his team to big wins. His backcourt mate JaQuez Thornton is also a very good scorer as well. These are guys that you will not want to face in this bracket.
